In today’s world, teaching children about integrity—doing what’s right even when no one is watching—is more important than ever. As an Indigenous author and storyteller, I’ve found that the wisdom passed down through our stories is one of the most powerful ways to nurture this value in young hearts.
My 21 Indigenous-themed books are rooted in the spiritual teachings of oneness, harmony, and responsibility. Here are five ways these stories help children understand and practice integrity, both in their own lives and within their communities: 1. Modeling Honest Choices Through Relatable Characters Indigenous stories often feature animal or child protagonists faced with important decisions. By following their journeys, children see the real-life impact of telling the truth, keeping promises, and admitting mistakes. These characters show that integrity isn’t always the easiest path, but it is always the most rewarding. 2. Highlighting the Power of Community and Accountability In Indigenous traditions, every action affects the whole community—just like the roots of a tree support one another underground. My stories emphasize that being honest and responsible isn’t just about personal reputation; it’s about caring for others and contributing to the strength of the group. 3. Teaching Through Consequences and Natural Law Rather than relying on punishment, Indigenous stories often let natural consequences unfold. When a character makes a poor choice, the lesson comes from what happens next—lost trust, missed opportunities, or the need to make amends. This gentle, cause-and-effect approach helps children understand why integrity matters. 4. Honoring Promises and Sacred Agreements Many stories in my books revolve around promises—between friends, family members, or even with the land and Creator. Children learn that honoring their word is a sacred act, and that trust is built (or broken) through everyday choices. These lessons carry into real life, encouraging young readers to value their own commitments. 5. Connecting Integrity to the Natural World Indigenous teachings remind us that all life is connected through a sacred web. When children see how honesty, respect, and responsibility help maintain harmony with nature, they understand that integrity extends beyond human relationships. It’s about living in balance—with people, animals, and the Earth itself. Why Integrity Matters Now In a fast-paced, ever-changing world, the timeless lessons of Indigenous stories offer children a steady compass. By weaving integrity into every tale, my hope is that young readers will grow up grounded in honesty, empathy, and respect—for themselves, their communities, and the world around them.
