Cohansey River
The name “Cohansey” evolved from a combination of original Lenape terms; Xhohkaxink means “crossing place of a river” or Okchaxkhane, meaning “crooked river; bend of a river.” Some of the translations found in the Lenape dictionaries and more than likely phonetically pronounced and incorrectly spelled as follows: Canahockink, Cohanzick, Cohanzey, Cohansie. Some of the early histories state that the river named after an Indian Chief called Canahockink.
